🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 It was fantastic to attend the SNP Annual Conference over the weekend and to stand with colleagues in support of John Swinney’s independence plan. The message was clear: it’s time for Scotland to decide its own future!

🤝 I also enjoyed meeting with so many inspiring organisations in the exhibition hall, including @thestrokeassociation, @scottishseafarms, @fbunational, @samhscotland, and many more who are doing vital work across Scotland.

🏆 A special highlight was seeing long-time Aberdeen South and North Kincardine branch member John McKay recognised with the SNP Party President’s Prize. A truly well-deserved award for his years of dedication and service to our movement.

🏴 Down in Westminster, it’s clear that no matter who is in power, Scotland is always an afterthought. That’s why in 2026, it’s so important that we return SNP MSPs to Holyrood to stand up for Scotland. You can always count on @thesnp to put Scotland’s interests first.

💗 Baby Loss Awareness Week runs from today to 15 October. It's a time to come together to remember much-loved and missed babies, and to show support for everyone affected by pregnancy and baby loss.

🕯️ On 15 October, people across the world will take part in the Wave of Light, lighting a candle at 7pm to honour every baby who died too soon.

🎗️ I’m grateful to organisations like @sandscharity and all those working to raise awareness, offer support, and break the silence surrounding baby loss.

🐾 Last week, I was pleased to stop by the Blue Cross Animal Welfare Exhibition in the Scottish Parliament.

💙 The exhibition shone a light on key priorities for animal welfare in Scotland, from ending greyhound racing and improving responsible dog ownership, to making cat microchipping compulsory and boosting access to pet support services.

🐶 A big thank you to the Blue Cross team for their continued work to protect animals and support pet owners across the country.

🤝 I was pleased to attend a drop-in session with the Royal College of Psychiatrists, marking the launch of their important new paper “Multi-System Solutions for Meeting the Needs of Autistic and ADHD People in Scotland.”

📊 With more than 65,000 people currently on waiting lists, it’s vital that we work together across health, education, employment, and social care to improve support and access to services.

✅ I welcome the ten recommended workstreams outlined in this paper and was glad to pledge my support for solutions that put people and their families at the heart of decision-making.

🌍 Scotland must build an inclusive and sustainable approach to neurodevelopmental care, and I look forward to working with colleagues to help make that happen.

🎥 This week I raised with the First Minister the importance of protecting jobs and skills in the North East as we move towards a clean energy future.

⚡ Our communities here have powered the country for generations, and it’s vital that they remain at the heart of Scotland’s energy transition.

🏫 I was pleased to join the First Minister at the opening of the new Energy Transition Skills Hub in Aberdeen, a £4.5 million investment from the Scottish Government’s Just Transition Fund, working in partnership with NESCol, ETZ Ltd and Shell UK.

🎥 Today in Parliament, I highlighted the exciting opening of the new Energy Transition Skills Hub in Aberdeen, a collaboration between North East Scotland College, ETZ Ltd and Shell. This will help power our evolving energy workforce and support the next generation of tech scale-up talent right here in the North East.

💡 I'm glad to see that the Deputy First Minister underlined the importance of ensuring programmes like Tech Scaler are accessible across Scotland, not just in the central belt. She also highlighted that the Government is focused on giving scale-ups the three things they need most: access to the right talent, access to capital, and access to the infrastructure their businesses require.

✅ For Aberdeen and the North East, this commitment matters. We have the skills, the innovation, and the ambition, and with the right backing, our region can continue to grow world-class businesses while leading the way in energy transition.

🌍 It was fantastic to join First Minister @john_swinney_snp this morning for the official opening of the new Energy Transition Skills Hub here in Aberdeen.

👩‍🏭 Today marks the handover from @etzltd who have spearheaded the project to @nescollege thereby supporting the next generation skilled workforce into good, secure jobs.

⚡The North-East has always been at the heart of Scotland’s energy industry, projects like this will ensure the region remains at the forefront of our energy transition.

🔒 It was great to meet with the team at Aberdeen’s Cyber and Fraud Hub to hear about the vital work they do to support businesses and individuals.

💻 We spoke about their next steps and plans for the future, and how I can assist them in continuing to protect our communities.

⚠️ Cybersecurity affects us all, and we’re only as strong as our weakest link. By staying alert and working together, we can help keep our communities safe online.

📲 I do not support the UK Government’s plan for a mandatory digital ID card. People should be able to go about their lives without this level of intrusion.

🛑 This so-called “BritCard” is an unnecessary and costly scheme that risks undermining civil liberties while draining public funds.

🤝 It was a pleasure to meet with representatives from the Jo Cox Foundation at the Scottish Parliament to hear about their work championing respect in politics.

🗣 Abuse and intimidation in political life remain serious challenges, and I welcome the Foundation’s efforts to tackle this deeply rooted problem.

💛 I look forward to following their important work and learning more about the practical steps being taken to promote a healthier political culture.

❓ Today in Parliament, I asked the Deputy First Minister about the UK’s poor economic model, one that leaves Scotland with lower productivity, lower income per head, and greater inequality than comparable independent countries.

📉 This problem existed before Brexit, but leaving the EU has only made things worse for Scotland’s economy and our future prospects.

💡 In response, the Deputy First Minister highlighted the importance of growing our working age population, investing in skills, and having the powers here in Scotland to deliver a fairer and more prosperous economy.

🏴 With the right decisions made in Scotland, we can match our economic strengths with the tools we need to build a better future.

🚆 Scotland’s trains are better in public hands

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Since your SNP Scottish Government brought ScotRail into public ownership, we’ve seen more services, fairer fares with peak tickets scrapped, and record passenger numbers.

💛 Instead of profits for shareholders, every penny goes back into improving the railway for people and communities.

🚆 It was great to meet with the @scotrail team to discuss progress here in the north east, from reducing delays and disruption, to recovery from severe weather events, recruitment, and much more.

🛤️ I was especially pleased to hear that work on a strong business case for a new Newtonhill station is continuing. This was a commitment I made in my 2021 manifesto, and I remain fully engaged with ScotRail, Nestrans, and local partners to keep momentum moving.

💛 Delivering better rail links is vital for our communities, and I’ll keep working to make Newtonhill station a reality.

✨I was delighted to get out and about across Aberdeenshire for this year’s @northeastopenstudios!

🎨 I had the pleasure of visiting a range of brilliant artists this year, from jewellery and ceramics, to knitwear, textiles, basket making and fine art. The talent and creativity across our communities is outstanding.

💛 NEOS is such a great way to celebrate the huge contribution local makers bring to the culture and economy of the North East. A big thank you to all the artists who welcomed visitors into their studios. It’s always a privilege to see your craft up close.

💡 Scotland doesn’t need costly, decades-long nuclear projects.

💷 Hinkley Point C is now expected to cost £48 billion, which is double the original estimate. Imagine if Scotland’s share of that was invested in our vast renewable potential instead.

⚡ We have the natural resources to power our future affordably, create thousands of jobs, and strengthen local supply chains right here in Scotland.

🚒 As always, it is a pleasure to meet with representatives from the @fbunational to hear their views and concerns about the ongoing SFRS Delivery Review that is seeking to reshape and modernise the organisation.

🧯 There is no doubt that the demands and pressures on our firefighters are changing, and SFRS recognises the need for reform and modernisation.

💛 As ever, we are grateful to the firefighter family in Scotland for their commitment to keeping us safe

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 A landmark day for Scotland’s justice system.

💛 I was proud to play a key role in delivering the Victims, Witnesses and Justice Reform Bill. This historic legislation puts victims and survivors at the very heart of justice.

📝 This Bill abolishes the confusing ‘not proven’ verdict, creates a specialist sexual offences court, strengthens victims’ rights, and establishes an independent Commissioner.

⭐ This is the change victims and survivors have long called for, and today, the Scottish Parliament has delivered.

🏠 It was good to catch up with the team from Crisis Scotland at the Scottish Parliament to talk about the need to change the law to prevent homelessness from happening in the first place, and I am pleased to hear that the team feel the Housing Bill contains new measures to help do that.

💛 Homelessness remains a significant issue across Scotland, so I welcome the Scottish Government's commitment to deliver 36,000 affordable homes by 2030 and provide safe housing for up to 24,000 children.

🌱 I asked the Cabinet Secretary for Energy & Climate Actions, Gillian Martin, for an update on Scotland’s Hydrogen Action Plan, and raised the exciting Thistle Hydrogen Valley project led by Aberdeen City Council.

🚌 This €9 million EU funding bid brings together 29 partners and could play a huge role in supporting transport, agriculture, construction and new green industries here in the North East.

⚡ It’s encouraging to hear the Cabinet Secretary’s recognition of the project and her commitment to ensuring tangible support for initiatives that will drive forward our hydrogen economy, create jobs, and put the North East at the heart of the energy transition.

🎤 Last week was #drugawarenessweek, a chance to highlight the enduring harm caused by substance use that impacts upon the lives of so many in Scotland.

⭐ My @scotparl Committee is currently undertaking an inquiry into substance use in prisons so I welcomed the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion at the annual @scottishdrugsforum Annual Conference to discuss the direction of travel of the Scottish Government's drugs policy, progress to date and what more we need to do.

🗣️ In Parliament last week, I asked about ensuring people with lived and living experience of drugs are central to shaping solutions to Scotland’s drug deaths crisis.

🤝 I welcome the Minister’s response and her recognition of the vital role that lived experience already plays in initiatives such as the Thistle safer drug consumption facility, the national collaborative, and peer support projects across Scotland.

💊 If we are to end preventable deaths, we must continue working together with those directly affected, not just listening to their voices, but empowering them as partners in driving change.

🔨 It was an absolute pleasure to once again visit the lads at the Culter Men’s Shed last week.

💛 It was great to see the fantastic work being done to bring people together, share skills, and support wellbeing in the community. The Shed is a brilliant example of how local spaces can make a big difference in tackling isolation and building friendships.

🤝 I also had the chance to hear some of the concerns local folks are facing, and I’ll be taking those back with me to see how I can help.

🌅 After the driest spring in 70 years and a drier than average August, reservoir levels are now lower than normal for this time of year. With demand also rising by around 100 million litres per day, it’s essential that we all do our part to protect supplies.

📈 Ofgem has confirmed that bills will rise again in October, pushing the average household’s annual costs up to £1,755. Families already battered by rising food prices are being forced to pay more just to keep the lights on, while standing charges soar too.

🥀 Scotland is an energy-rich nation, yet households here are paying among the highest bills in Europe. Westminster’s broken energy system puts profit before people, and it’s ordinary families who suffer.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 It doesn’t have to be this way. With the powers of independence, Scotland could harness our vast renewable resources to bring bills down and put fairness first.

🔶 It was a pleasure to catch up with Bruce Skinner from @altomssp, who has been providing managed IT support in Aberdeen since 2009.

💛 Following on from my recent meeting with the @fsb_uk, which Bruce attended in my constituency office. I was delighted to be invited along to ALTO’s base for a follow-up chat and a tour of their impressive operation.

🗣️ We spoke about everything from apprenticeships and staff training to the funding opportunities the Scottish Government has introduced for the sector. It was also a chance to hear more about how companies like ALTO are driving growth locally in areas such as manufacturing, energy, and the third sector - with cyber resilience, skills development, and tech infrastructure at the heart of that progress.

🤝 It was great to visit the team at @abdninspired with Kevin Stewart MSP followed by a stop at @mollysbistroaberdeen.

🍽️ We had a really positive discussion about Aberdeen Inspired's future plans for our city centre, including the upcoming Aberdeen Restaurant Week, which has become a fantastic celebration of local food and hospitality. We also touch on the success of their Aberdeen Gift card, which you can spend locally in over 300 different businesses. And of course, we also reflected on the huge success of the Tall Ships Races, which brought thousands of visitors and a real buzz to Aberdeen earlier this summer. These kinds of events show the creativity and ambition we have right here in the North East.

🔷 Our visit comes as we celebrate the beginning of the third Scotland Loves Local Week, running from Saturday 23rd to Saturday 30th August 2025.

💛 This year’s theme is “People Make Places” – a reminder that behind every business, event, and initiative are people working hard to make our communities special. The Scotland Loves Local campaign is all about recognising those people, backing local businesses, and ensuring that the heart of our communities continues to thrive.

🙌 It was a pleasure to chair the panel discussion on Drug Harm at @scotparl Festival of Politics in partnership with @universityofstirling

🎤 Our panel of experts included Kirsten Horsburgh, CEO Scottish Drugs Forum, Catriona Matheson, Professor of Substance Use, University of Stirling and Patricia Tracey, Head of Alcohol & other Drugs at Turning Point Scotland.

👥 It was great to have an honest and wide ranging discussion that recognised the challenges for services adapting to the impact of poly-drug use, and while policy is moving in the right direction, there is much more work to be done.

⭐ This fund empowers local groups to tackle #mentalhealth and #wellbeing challenges across #Aberdeenshire. So far, an incredible £2.6 million has supported 266 community projects in Aberdeenshire alone!

💛 Over £645,000 is available to support grassroots, community-based initiatives here in the North East and across Aberdeen South and North Kincardine.

🚨 As Convenor of the Criminal Justice Committee, I recently visited HMP Grampian along with Liam Kerr MSP to discuss drugs in Scottish prisons.

⭐ We had hugely informative sessions with the leadership team, staff and prisoners across a range of issues.

💛 I am grateful for the frank and open conversations that will help us understand the multiple factors behind this complex and highly challenging issue.

ℹ Important update for constituents

Ofgem has begun phasing out Radio Teleswitch (RTS) meters, which are older electricity meters often used with storage heaters and off-peak tariffs like Economy 7 or Economy 10.

📍I am aware that there are still some households in Aberdeen South and North Kincardine that may be affected. If you still have an RTS meter, you should contact your energy supplier as soon as possible to arrange a smart meter upgrade.

Without an upgrade, you could face:

Disruption to heating or hot water

Higher energy costs if your meter can’t switch between peak and off-peak rates

💡 How to check:
If you use electricity for heating, have no gas supply, or your tariff offers cheaper energy overnight, you may have an RTS meter. Your supplier can confirm.

If you think you might be affected, call your energy supplier immediately. They are prioritising upgrades and can respond quickly if you experience issues.

💛 It was great to visit @deemouthartiststudios in Torry last week. A highlight of the summer! 😍

🎨 The studios are home to a group of wonderful creators including the lovely @helenruthscarf each bringing their own unique creativity to our community.

🧑‍🎨 I heard about the exciting plans for a possible expansion, which would create space for even more local artists to develop their talents and share their work.

🎨 Deemouth is a precious part of Aberdeen’s cultural life, and despite the challenges, their contribution to putting the North-East on the creative map is second to none.

🤝 It was a pleasure to once again catch up with Chris Foy from VisitAberdeenshire.

🌳 We talked about the fantastic success of the Tall Ships Races in Aberdeen, the upcoming Visitor Levy, and the welcome rise in tourism across both the city and shire. It’s clear our region is attracting more people than ever, from those enjoying our vibrant city to adventurers exploring our coastal paths, countryside, and mountain trails.

💛 Tourism plays a vital role in supporting local jobs and businesses, and I’m looking forward to seeing how we can continue building on this momentum.

🤝 It was great to welcome Deputy First Minister @kate_forbes_msp to @josephrobertsonaberdeenltd in Torry today.

⭐ We had a productive discussion with the brilliant team about their exciting future plans, including investment and expansion that will see this long-standing family business continue to thrive. 🤝 It was a pleasure to catch up with Mike Duncan from the Federation of Small Businesses - FSB, joined by Bruce Skinner, owner of Alto IT Managed Services, based right here in Tullos, in the constituency.

💻 We had a great discussion about @altomssp IT’s successes, the challenges they face, and how I, along with the Scottish Government, can help support their future ambitions.

⭐ It was great to hear about how they are implementing their vision for Belmont, future funding plans and how the utilising their £507,000 of multi-year funding recently awarded to them by Creative Scotland that is funded by The Scottish Government and National Lottery!

🥩 Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of visiting McIntosh Donald Butcher Shop, based in Portlethen.

🍴 They’re known for their high-quality produce, including Angus beef, and they go above and beyond by sourcing from local farmers and supporting local jobs.

🌍 I was amazed to learn they supply not just across the North East, but across Europe and even as far as the Vatican!

💛 It’s great to see a business so committed to quality, community, and putting local food on the map.
