As the Scottish Parliament marked its 25th anniversary, it was an honour to celebrate this milestone in the company of my chosen local hero, Crew Commander Gary Carroll of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Portlethen Fire Training Centre. Gary embodies the spirit of dedication, service, and resilience that inspires us all.

Gary has made remarkable contributions not only to the local community but also on the global stage. As a key member of the UK International Search and Rescue teams, his expertise has been pivotal during overseas deployments, where he worked alongside his highly trained rescue dogs, Diesel and Coorie. These missions, often in the aftermath of devastating natural disasters, highlight Gary’s unwavering commitment to saving lives and providing hope in the most challenging circumstances.

Gary Carroll exemplifies the very best of our community: courage, compassion, and selflessness. It was a privilege to recognise him as my local hero—a testament to the extraordinary individuals who make our communities stronger and safer every day.

To Gary and the countless others like them, I extend my deepest gratitude. You remind us all of the power of dedication and the impact of service. Thank you for all that you do.
