A major infrastructure project is now underway in Aberdeen to secure and enhance the city's electricity supply. The Redmoss to Clayhills Underground Cable Replacement project will see the installation of new 132kV circuits between Redmoss substation in Langdykes Road and Clayhills substation in South College Street. Over the course of the project, a total of 10km of cable will be replaced, ensuring a more reliable power network for the future.

SSEN Transmission, in partnership with its contractor Balfour Beatty, is working closely with Aberdeen City Council, which is managing the traffic restrictions required to facilitate the works. While such improvements are essential, they do come with temporary disruption. As such, it is important that residents and commuters are aware of the planned road restrictions and make necessary travel adjustments where needed.

The first phase of restrictions has already begun on Wellington Road, where enabling works are expected to last for approximately eight months. Now, SSEN Transmission has published the full schedule of restrictions covering the anticipated nine-month duration of the project. Not all roads will be affected at the same time, and each restriction is expected to last around five months from its start date.

Scheduled Road Restrictions:

27 January 2025 – Abbotswell Crescent will be closed from its junction with Redmoss Road to the boundary between numbers 231 and 233 Abbotswell Crescent.

14 February 2025 – West Tullos Road will be closed to southbound traffic from its junction with King George VI Bridge Roundabout to its junction with Abbotswell Roundabout. A prohibition on right turns from West Tullos Road onto Abbotswell Road will also be in place.

18 February 2025 – Abbotswell Crescent will be closed from its junction with Arbroath Way to the southern boundary of number 128 Abbotswell Crescent.

11 March 2025 – Great Southern Road will be closed to southbound traffic from its junction with Whinhill Roundabout to its junction with Duthie Park Roundabout.

24 March 2025 – Whinhill Road will be closed to southbound traffic from its junction with Whinhill Gate to its junction with Whinhill Roundabout.

27 March 2025 – Fonthill Road will be closed to westbound traffic from its junction with Polmuir Road to its junction with Whinhill Road.

7 April 2025 – Ferryhill Road will be closed from its junction with Crown Street to its junction with Ferryhill Terrace.

All dates are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances such as adverse weather. Up-to-date information on road restrictions, including alternative routes, is available on the Aberdeen City Council website.

While temporary road closures can be an inconvenience, these essential works will deliver long-term benefits for Aberdeen’s energy infrastructure. I encourage residents to stay informed, plan ahead, and bear with the necessary disruption as we work towards securing a more reliable power network for our city.
